Because John Flamsteed compiled his star numbers from the northern hemisphere, true Flamsteed numbers are limited to the northern and equatorialconstellations. Following Flamsteed, other observers later extended his system to include southern constellations omitted by Flamsteed himself. These extended systems are not now in general use, but the numbers assigned by Bode and by Gould are still sometimes used for prominent objects. These southern numbering systems are only included selectively below, where the number in question remains in relatively common use.
