The star that forms the 'crest' of Hydra's head is a multiple system, at the heart of which lies a close binary pair consisting of a yellowgiant and whitesubgiant. The central pair of stars are orbited in turn by another close binary pair, and the system has at least one further member, a tiny reddwarf some 800 AU from the core of the system.
