Binary

A common phenomenon whereby what appears to be a single star to the naked eye is in fact a pair of stars in orbit around one another.

This image shows Kuma or Nu Draconis, with its two component stars sufficiently separated that the system's binary nature is easily seen. Both components of the system are white main sequence stars, separated from one another in the sky by just over one arcminute. The system is nearly a hundred light years from the Sun, which suggests that the two stars actually lie more than a light year apart. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
