Hyarrostar

The southeastern region of Númenor

Regions of Númenor

The wide promontory that spread out to the south and east of Númenor, and in fact contained its easternmost point. Along its southern shores were wide beaches of white sands, and on its western borders, where the shorelands were interrupted by the mouths of the River Siril, stood the township of Nindamos. The Hyarrostar was most famous for its trees, and it held great plantations that provided wood for Númenor's shipwrights.

In general, 'r' sounds in Elvish words are 'trilled', so the final 'r' of Hyarrostar should be distinctly pronounced. The pronunciation of this name is complicated slightly by the fact that it already contains a double 'r' earlier in the word, which in fact represents two separate 'r' sounds. The initial Hyarro- of the name means 'southeeast', and is composed of two Elvish elements, hyar 'south' and ro 'east', hence 'hyar-ro' in the pronunciation guide shown here. Again, the final 'r' sound of hyar should be trilled, so the pronunciation of this element could be represented as 'hyarr-ro'.
