Tar-Calion

The Elvish form of the name Ar-Pharazôn

The Elvish equivalent of the name of the Númenórean King Ar-Pharazôn. It would never have been used in his presence, but was, out of tradition, recorded in this Elvish form as the names of the ancient Kings had always been.

Notes

1

Tar-Calion is the Elvish version of the Adûnaic name Ar-Pharazôn, but the two are not exactly equivalent in meaning. Pharazôn is interpreted as 'Golden', but there are no Elvish elements relating to 'gold' in Calion. Rather, on a direct reading it seems to mean 'son of light'. Given this King's association with gold, the Elvish version of his name was perhaps meant in a slightly metaphorical sense, to communicate the gleam or shine of gold.
