Notes

1

II 3441 is the date of Sauron's defeat in the War of the Last Alliance. The role of the Ringwraiths in that war is not described in any detail, nor is their immediate fate after their master's fall. The comment here that they retreated into the East is based on a note in Unfinished Tales Part Three I, The Disaster of the Gladden Fields. In a discussion of those few of Sauron's forces that might have survived the war, it is said that, if there were any survivors, '...they had fled far to the East with the Ringwraiths'. Though rather indirect, this does show that the Ringwraiths escaped into the East at this time, and they would not return to the Westlands for many centuries.
