Yavannamírë

A tree out of the West

The western coastlands of Númenor, around the haven of Eldalondë, were known as Nísimaldar, and were filled with fragrant trees brought out of the West by the Elves. There were many kinds of these trees, and most were never seen in Middle-earth. It was common for them to take their names from the Valar, or from places in their land of Valinor, and among these was one named yavannamírë, 'jewel of Yavanna'. Like all the trees of Nísimaldar, it gave off a fragrant scent, and it grew rounded scarlet fruits, the red 'jewels' that gave the tree its name.1

Notes

1

The use of the Elvish word for 'jewel' to describe a tree with scarlet fruit is not unique to yavannamírë. The name carnimírië ('red-jewelled') was used for the rowan or mountain ash, a tree whose berries grow in clusters of bright red.
