A name used in Middle-earth to refer to the Númenóreans and their descendants. It was used by Ghân-buri-Ghân in the Drúadan Forest, but it seems to have been more widespread than this. Gollum twice used the term to refer to the Men of Gondor, suggesting that it was widely used among the peoples of Middle-earth.
The name was well earned, for the Dúnedain were considerably taller on average than other Men. The leader of the Exiles of Númenor, Elendil, was known as Elendil the Tall, and reached a height of nearly eight feet (or about 2.4 metres). Elendil was evidently exceptional, but even at the end of the Third Age, the great height of the Dúnedain as a people was often remarked upon.
