Notes

1

The name Ghân-buri-Ghân presumably comes from the (entirely unknown) language of the Drúedain, and for that reason is probably not interpretable. There is, however, an Elvish root Ʒan- which would be pronounced as ghan, and means simply 'Man'. This might be simple coincidence, or it might hint at some influence of Elvish in the development of the tongue of the Drúedain.

Given the form of the name, the -buri- element may conceivably be a patronymic, so the full name Ghân-buri-Ghân would mean 'Ghân son of Ghân'. In other words, the headman's was named Ghân, and his father was also named Ghân. This is speculative to say the least, but it does seem to fit the structure of the name.
