Merry Gamgee

Sam Gamgee’s second son

The fourth child, and second son, of Samwise Gamgee and Rose Cotton. Born eight years after Sam's return from the War of the Ring, Merry was the second of his children to be named for a member of the Company of the Ring (the first being Frodo, born four years earlier). Merry took his name from the common nickname of Meriadoc Brandybuck, at that time heir to Master Saradoc of Brandy Hall.

The name 'Merry' was in fact an anglicisation of the Westron Kali, so 'historically', this son of Sam and Rosie would probably have been known as Kali Galpsi (where Galpsi was the original form of the more familiar family name 'Gamgee').
