The descent of the Kings of Númenórë from Elros the first King to Ar-Pharazôn the last. Names shown in bold were accounted true Kings or Queens. Note that some known marriages and siblings are omitted from this diagram where they are not directly related to the descent of the Kings.

When the Númenóreans spoke an Elvish tongue, they would usually use the Sindarin language, and so the Elvish name of their land would normally appear in its Sindarin form: Númenor, literally 'West-land'. The form of this name in Quenya or High-elven shared an etymology, and was thus similar: Númenórë.

The King of Númenor was thus known, in Quenya, as the King of Númenórë. Because Quenya was rarely used in Númenor itself, this form is almost never seen. We do, however, have one prominent example, in a letter¹ from Gil-galad, King of the High Elves in Middle-earth to Tar-Meneldur the fifth King of Númenor. There Gil-galad, a Quenya speaker, uses the form Númenórë throughout, addressing Tar-Meneldur formally as the 'King of Númenórë'.
