The son of Eärendil and brother of Elrond, who chose to be counted amongst the kin of Men, and became the first King of Númenor and longest-lived of all Men.

'Elf of the Spray' is based on an old story of Elros' childhood, in which he was carried off by the Sons of Fëanor with his brother Elrond, but they were later found near a forest waterfall. Elros was playing in the water, hence his name, which relates to the spray of the waterfall. It should be said, though, that it isn't clear whether Tolkien meant this story to stand. In the Silmarillion, Christopher Tolkien interprets Elros quite differently, as 'Star-foam'.
