The direct Sindarin translation of the Quenya name Melkor, referring to the first Dark Lord, and meaning 'he who arises in might'. Wishing to avoid a direct recognition of Melkor's power, the Sindar tended to use an adapted form of the name, Belegurth, meaning 'great death'. Both these forms fell out of use after Melkor's return to Middle-earth, when the name given to him by Fëanor - Morgoth the Black Foe - came to be universally used.
