Ar-Inziladûn

Tar-Palantir’s original Adûnaic name

The name of the twenty-fourth ruler of Númenor, Heir to Ar-Gimilzôr, in his native Adûnaic language. For historical reasons, the name - which means 'Flower of the West' - was rarely used in practice. Until this King's time, it had been the tradition for several generations to take a royal name in the native Númenórean language, but Inziladûn reversed this, and returned to the older convention of using the Quenya language. He renamed himself Tar-Palantir, 'The Farsighted', and under his rule the realm of Númenor returned to its ancient and noble traditions, at least for a time.

Notes

1

The later Kings of Númenor had two royal names, one in their native Adûnaic and one in Elvish. Typically these two names were translations of one another, but Ar-Inziladûn was an exception to this general rule. Inziladûn had been his Adûnaic given name, and he simply adopted the royal prefix Ar- when he became King of Númenor. The direct Elvish translation of this would have been Tar-Númellótë, 'King, Flower of the West'. Instead, he chose a quite different Elvish name, Tar-Palantir, meaning 'King Farsighted', in reference to his vision of a Númenor reconciled with the Valar and the Eldar.
