From each of the Two Trees of Valinor, a shimmering dew fell: a dew of silver light from Telperion, and a dew of golden light from Laurelin. Varda caused these dews to be collected into great lake-like vats, the Wells of Varda, that spread their light throughout the land of Valinor. It was from the silver Wells of Telperion that Varda took the dews that she used to create the most brilliant stars in the sky. Thus starlight from the Wells of Varda spread over Middle-earth for the Elves that would soon awaken there.
Like the Two Trees that created their glowing waters, the Wells of Varda did not survive the Darkening of Valinor. After the destruction of the Trees themselves, the great spider Ungoliant went to the Wells and drained each of them, growing to an immense size while filling Valinor with darkness in place of the Wells' shimmering light.
