Vása

A name among the Noldor for the Sun

One of the various names give by the Elves to the Sun, the great light formed from the last shining fruit of the Golden Tree Laurelin. The Elves usually knew the Sun as Anar (in Quenya) or Anor (in Sindarin), a name relating to the Elvish root word for 'fire'. Among the Noldor, however, the Sun gained another name, which was Vása.

In the Silmarillion, the name Vása is interpreted as the 'Heart of Fire', but its strict meaning was the 'consumer'. That name had a literal meaning, in that the Sun burned with a consuming fire, but also symbolic meaning, as the first rising of the Sun marked the Awakening of Men in the distant East of Middle-earth, and so the first seed of the Dominion of Men and the ultimate fading of the Elves.
