Tîw

A name for the Tengwar

A Sindarin word interpreted as 'signs' or 'letters', occasionally used to describe the writing system originally devised by Rúmil of Tirion, and later redeveloped by Fëanor. They were rather better known by the Quenya form of their name, Tengwar, but the word Tîw does appear in one prominent place: on the West-gate of Moria. In the form thiw, it appears in the inscription Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i thiw hin, 'Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs' (The Fellowship of the Ring II 4, A Journey in the Dark)
