Sons of Elrond

In the hundred and thirtieth year of the Third Age, Celebrían gave birth to twin Elf-children, the brothers Elladan and Elrohir, each with the dark hair and grey eyes of their father. As the sons of Elrond Half-elven, they inherited their father's ancestry, being descended from both the High Elves and the Edain. As such they were given the choice to sail into the West with the Elves, or remain as Mortals in Middle-earth. They took neither of these choices while the Third Age lasted, choosing instead to aid their father and his allies in the war against the Shadow.

In III 2509 their mother Celebrían was captured by Orcs in the Misty Mountains, and the Sons of Elrond rode to rescue her from the Orcs' dens. They succeeded, but she had been poisoned and tortured. Though Elrond healed her, she had lost all will to remain in Middle-earth, and soon took a ship from the Havens into the West.

Elladan and Elrohir had been allies of the Dúnedain throughout the Third Age, and they often fought alongside the Chieftains in the days after the fall of Arthedain. As with all the Chieftains since Arahael, Aragorn was fostered at the home of their father, and when he grew to manhood he would often ride to adventure with the Sons of Elrond.

In the War of the Ring, Elladan and Elrohir set out as scouts from Rivendell, and journeyed southward as far as Lórien before returning to their father with news of Galadriel's country. As the War drew on, they set out into the south again in the company of Halbarad and a company of Rangers, and met with Aragorn near the Fords of Isen. They travelled with him through the Paths of the Dead, and took part in the great battles that brought that Age to an end.

After the defeat of Sauron, the Sons of Elrond returned to their father's House at Rivendell, and remained there for a time after Elrond's departure in the White Ship. Their final choice, and thus their ultimate fate, is unknown: they either took ship into the West themselves, or abandoned their immortality like their sister Arwen and remained in the Mortal lands.
