A narrow land at the eastern end of Nan Dungortheb, lying between the upper waters of the rivers Esgalduin and Aros. Eastward lay the plain of Himlad, but in the land between the rivers it was said that nothing lived; no Elf, Man or beast (presumably because of the terror of the dreadful valley to the west). So it was called the Silent Land (a translation of Elvish Dor Dínen). Though the land may have been empty of dwellings, it was not entirely deserted: a road passed through the Silent Land from the bridge of Iant Iaur in the west to the ford of the Arossiach in the east, though in the later days of the First Age this would have been a perilous route to travel.
