A grandson of the Old Took, Sigismond was the son of Hildibrand Took, who was in turn the eighth of Old Gerontius' many children. Sigismond Took was born during the later years of his grandfather's long reign as Thain of the Shire, and indeed during Sigismond's hundred-and-one-year life, he would see three further Thains succeed the Old Took in turn (these were his uncles Isengrim III and Isumbras IV, followed by his cousin Fortinbras II).
Sigismond was born in the year III 2890 (1290 by the Shire-reckoning), which was by coincidence the same birth year as Bilbo Baggins (who was indeed a first cousin to Sigismond, being the son of Sigismond's aunt Belladonna). Though Sigismond lived for a little more than a century (a typical lifespan for a Hobbit), he was far outlived by his contemporary Bilbo, whose life had been unnaturally extended through his possession of the One Ring. Sigismond died ten years before Bilbo's Farewell Party, but his line continued through his two children, Rosamunda and Ferdinand, who were both present at the feast. Through is daughter Rosamunda, Sigismond was grandfather to Fredegar ('Fatty') Bolger and also to Estella Bolger, who would go on to marry Meriadoc Brandybuck of the Company of the Ring.
