One of two names in Sindarin for the sixth and last day of the Elves' week. The alternative name was Orbelain, and both mean approximately 'Day of the Powers', dedicating the day to the Valar. Actually Rodyn is simply a Sindarin word for 'Powers', so it perhaps represents an abbreviated form of a longer original name. In Quenya, the same day was known as Valanya or Tárion.

The most common Sindarin word for the Valar was Belain or 'Powers', but Rodyn was a rarer alternative name. Its etymology is unclear, but it perhaps derives from a root-word meaning 'high' (and this supposition is supported by its Quenya equivalent Tárion, which evidently also means '(day) of the High Ones'. This association helps to explain how the Elvish name of the day dedicated to the Powers of Arda became adapted into Mannish as 'Highday'. |
