Rider of Last Hope

The song of Rochon Methestel

A song made to remember the heroism of Borondir, the rider of Gondor who brought Eorl to the Battle of the Field of Celebrant and thereby saved Gondor from invasion. In the face of an unstoppable assault in the year III 2509, Steward Cirion sent three pairs riders northward to seek aid from the Éothéod. The first four of these riders were slain on the perilous road along the Vales of Anduin, and the final pair were also nearly lost. One of these last two riders was shot with arrows, but Borondir, the only surviving messenger, was able to reach Eorl and convince him to ride to Gondor's aid.

In the Ride of Eorl that followed, Eorl the Young led an army on the long road back down the Vales of Anduin to the Field of Celebrant, and Borondir accompanied them. Indeed, he was said to have been the first of the riders to cross the river Limlight and engage the invading Balchoth. He fell in the battle that followed, and was entombed among the rulers of Gondor in the Hallows of Minas Tirith. The song of the Rider of Last Hope, Rochon Methestel in Elvish, was made in his honour.
