Quest of Mount Doom

The mission of the Ring-bearer

(1) 25 December III 3018 The Company of the Ring sets out from Rivendell, beginning the Quest of Mount Doom.
(2) 15 January III 3019 Having failed to cross the Misty Mountains through the Redhorn Pass, the Company travels through Moria. Most of the Fellowship survive its dangers, but Gandalf encounters a Balrog and falls from the Bridge of Khazad-dûm.
(3) 16 February After spending time in Lórien, the Company are given boats by Galadriel and Celeborn, enabling them to continue southward on the Great River (the part of the journey here shown in blue).
(4) 26 February At Parth Galen the Fellowship of the Ring is broken and Boromir is slain. Leaving the others, Frodo and Sam set out into the Emyn Muil to complete the Quest.
(5) 13 March Having been poisoned by Shelob, Frodo is captured by Orcs. The Ring is held by Sam, and thus saved from capture. Sam later succeeds in rescuing Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol.
(6) 25 March The Ring goes into the Fire, and the Quest of Mount Doom is achieved.

The quest of the Wise to bring the One Ring to Orodruin, and there destroy it. Nine set out on the quest, the Company of the Ring, but only two succeeded in reaching Mount Doom: Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee.
