A common shortened form of the name of the Inn of Bree, more fully known as The Prancing Pony. A large inn equipped to serve both Men and Hobbits, The Pony had been kept by the family of the Butterburs for generations, and was considered to be the centre of the 'art' of pipe-smoking. Its name, The Prancing Pony, was painted above the arch of its doorway, and above that stood a sign showing the image of a rearing white pony.
