The origin of 'mugwort' as the name of an aromatic plant, from which the Mugwort family took their own name, is not known with certainty. Some sources suggest a combination Old Norse/Old English muggi-wyrt 'marsh root', while others prefer a purely Old English mycg-wyrt, 'midge root'. Either of these seem plausible, especially given the proximity of the Midgewater Marshes to the Mugworts' home in the Bree-land.
