In The History of the Hobbit, John D. Rateliff suggests an interpretation of the name Morwen as 'daughter of night', and this is entirely reasonable based purely on the elements of her name. However, in the essay Quendi and Eldar in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth, Tolkien gives an explicit interpretation of the name: 'Túrin's mother was named Morwen, 'dark maiden', because of her dark hair...'. |
