A title used by Legolas to address Treebeard, the chief of the Ents of Fangorn Forest. Indeed, the Ent was not only the Master of the Forest, but even gave his name to it: 'Treebeard' in Elvish is Fangorn, hence the Forest was sometimes called just 'Fangorn'. Treebeard himself was extremely ancient, and in the days of the First Age he wandered widely across Middle-earth. Fangorn's Wood was also ancient, and had one time spread across great swathes of the western lands. The woodcutting of the Númenóreans during the Second Age cleared many of these trees, but Fangorn Forest was left as an outlier at the southern end of the Misty Mountains. There it remained under the care of Treebeard until the time of the War of the Ring and beyond.
