Mámandil

A ‘shepherd’ of Emerië

Ancalimë was the only Heir of Tar-Aldarion of Númenor, and as such was pursued by many noble suitors. To escape from these, she withdrew from court life, and hid among the pastoral lands of Emerië. There she met a man who seemed to be a simple shepherd, by the name of Mámandil. Their friendship grew, but at last she discovered that he was not a shepherd at all, but Hallacar son of Hallatar, a nobleman of Hyarastorni. He sought her royal hand, and though she rejected him at first, at last they wed and produced a son, Anárion, who would ultimately succeed his mother to become the King of Númenor.

Notes

1

We don't know exactly when Hallacar briefly adopted the identity of Mámandil, but we do know that it followed the events of II 892, when Ancalimë was proclaimed the King's Heir, and then went into hiding as a shepherdess for a time.

2

Hallacar adopted this alias in order to appear as a shepherd and woo Ancalimë, and at that level a name meaning 'devoted to sheep' (or, essentially, 'shepherd') fitted the role well.
