A boy who lived in the region of Númenor known as Emerië, near the White House of Erendis. He was known to Ancalimë, the future Queen of the island, while she was still a girl dwelling in the White House. Îbal's father was Ulbar, who served the Great Captain Aldarion on his ships. It was Îbal's ambition to sail the Great Sea like his father, but we are never told whether he was able to realise this dream.
Notes
1 |
We have no dates for Îbal, but we do know that he was a child at the same time as Ancalimë, the daughter of Aldarion and Erendis. Ancalimë was known to have been born in II 873, so Îbal must have been born within a few years of this date.

Îbal's name is evidently Adûnaic in form, but we have only a very limited vocabulary for that language, and nothing that directly explains the name's meaning. Given that his father Ulbar was a mariner, and Îbal also hoped to sail the Great Sea, the name might possibly be connected with Adûnaic balak, 'ship', though this is extremely speculative.
