Gundor's mother Gildis is mentioned only in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth, and is not strictly canonical.
The youngest child of Hador Lórindol, Gundor was brother to Glóredhel and Galdor. Raised in his father's house in Dor-lómin, he was brought up to speak the Sindarin tongue, and in adulthood joined the armies of the Elves. In the Dagor Bragollach, when Gundor would have been thirty-seven years old, Morgoth sent a vast array of forces against Barad Eithel, Fingolfin's great fortress that guarded the land of Hithlum. Gundor was there, fighting beside his father in defence of that fortress, and there he fell, shot by many Orc-arrows. Though Gundor's father Hador also fell in that battle, Barad Eithel stood, and Morgoth's assault on Hithlum was repelled.

Gundor's dates are given as part of a genealogical chart of the descendants of Marach in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth (The War of the Jewels). They are not therefore strictly canonical, though they do fit well with the more definitive dates we have for members of the House of Hador.

Gundor's name possibly derives from the Elvish root kundú-, meaning 'prince', as seen (for example) in the name Baragund.
