Grey Fool

Denethor’s scornful title for Gandalf

The people of Minas Tirith had great respect for Gandalf the Grey - or Mithrandir, as he was generally known there. This was especially true of Faramir, the younger son of Steward Denethor II, but Denethor himself had little regard for the Wizard. No doubt partly due to the malign influence of the Anor-stone, the old Steward viewed Gandalf with suspicion and mistrust, going so far as to refer to him as the Grey Fool on several occasions. This scornful title was likely a play on Gandalf's Elvish name Mithrandir, which meant 'Grey Wanderer'.
