Hyarmendacil I, Gondor's fifteenth King, conquered the Harad and expanded the boundaries of his realm. When he died in III 1149, his heir Atanatar inherited a kingdom that stretched from the river Greyflood in the north to the Sea of Rhûn in the east, and received tribute from the Haradrim to the south. As King of this great land, Atanatar II gained the Elvish title Alcarin, meaning 'Glorious'. He ruled the South-kingdom for seventy-seven years, but in that time he did little to build on the great works of his father, and after his death Gondor would never again achieve the greatness it had held during his glorious reign.
