Across the northern pass into Mordor, at the entrance the Haunted Pass of Cirith Gorgor, Sauron built a stone rampart. Into that rampart he set a great iron gate to guard the entrance to his land. The iron doors that made up the gate had various names, and are best known by their Elvish name, the Morannon, which translates as 'Black Gate'.
