Elves of Harlindon

The people of Lindon south of the Gulf of Lhûn

After the sinking of Beleriand at the end of the First Age, most of the remaining Elves of Middle-earth gathered under the rule of Gil-galad in the land of Lindon, west of the Blue Mountains. That land was divided into two parts by the wide Gulf of Lhûn, and the southern and smaller part was known as Harlindon (simply from the Elvish for 'south Lindon').

Harlindon was noted as being populated mainly by Sindarin Elves, and these would include many of the survivors of Doriath who had afterward dwelt by the Mouths of Sirion. One of these was apparently Celeborn, a kinsman of King Thingol. For a time, it seems that Celeborn ruled the people of Harlindon as a separate land under the overall rule of High King Gil-galad.1

Notes

1

It should be said that the history of Celeborn during this period is far from settled, and though Tolkien certainly saw him as the ruler of Harlindon at one point, this may not have been his final intention. We are also lacking any reference that suggests the precise period that Celeborn ruled in Harlindon. The natural assumption would be the time before the settlement of Eregion in II 750, in which Celeborn apparently played some part, but it is not entirely impossible that he travelled eastwards and then returned to Lindon at some later point in its history.
