With Duilin, one of the two tall sons of Duinhir, lord of the Blackroot Vale at the time of the War of the Ring. With five hundred archers of their people, Derufin and Duilin travelled to the aid of Minas Tirith, far to the east of their own lands that lay under the shadow of the White Mountains. There, the brothers fought together in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and both were lost in an assault on the mighty mûmakil.
Notes
1 |
We do not have detailed information about the geography or politics of the Blackroot Vale region, but Erech was clearly the largest and most important township in this region, and therefore presumably the seat of its lords.

2 |
Derufin's name seems to contain the Elvish elements nder-, 'man, adult male' and -fin 'hair', though it's unclear whether this is the intended derivation, or indeed what significance these elements were meant to convey.
