One of the many names given by Elves to the race of Men, because the earliest people of that race awoke as the Sun first rose into the sky of Arda. The name contrasts Men with Elves, the People of the Stars, who awoke to starlight and in Middle-earth dwelt under it for long ages. Thus Men were said to have a fear and distrust of the darkness which the Elves did not share, and hence they gained another title: the Night-fearers.
