A grandson of Tar-Amandil, the third King of Númenor, Caliondo could therefore trace his ancestry back to Elros the first King. His father was Tar-Amandil's second son, Eärendur, and Caliondo gave rise to his own line of descent through his son Malantur. Indeed, by the laws of Númenor at the time of his birth, the Kingship would have passed to Caliondo's line when Tar-Aldarion the sixth King failed to produce a son. However, the law was changed to allow Aldarion's daughter, Ancalimë, to become Númenor's first Ruling Queen.

The elements of Caliondo's name can be interpreted as something like 'hall of light' (or possibly 'stone of light'), but it's uncertain whether either of these were Tolkien's intended meaning.
