Amdír is a name from the little-known Nandorin dialect, and its intended meaning is not explained. Its second element may possibly be derived from dír, 'man' (or specifically, in this case, 'male Elf'). An alternative interpretation, 'looking up', comes from a source (Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth in volume X of The History of Middle-earth) where the word amdír is explained as a philosophical concept related to hope rather than a personal name. If this concept can be applied to Amdír's name, then it could presumably be interpreted as something like 'one who looks up (with hope)'. |
