Woodhall

A village of the eastern Shire

Map of Woodhall

A village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. Frodo, Sam and Pippin met Gildor Inglorion and his people in the woods above Woodhall, and the three passed close by the village on the last stages of their journey to Bucklebury Ferry.

Notes

1

The 'hall' in Woodhall does not carry its modern meaning of a large building, but instead derives from Old English -healh, a partially enclosed region of land. The cause of the enclosure would vary by use, but in the case of Woodhall the name clearly refers to the surrounding trees of Woody End. So, in full, the name Woodhall means something like 'land partially surrounded by woods'.
