White Company

The Guard of Faramir

A body of the soldiers of Gondor assigned to be the personal guard of Faramir in his station as Prince of Ithilien and Steward to King Elessar. Their captain was Beregond of Minas Tirith, and they dwelt among the hills of Emyn Arnen where the Prince had his seat. The 'White' of the Company's name presumably relates to the simple white banner that was used as the standard of the Stewards of Gondor.1

Notes

1

Given this apparent connection to the Stewards, the White Company may have existed historically as the personal guard of the Stewards of Gondor. They are, however, never mentioned except in connection to Faramir, and on balance it seems more likely that the company was created by Aragorn specifically for the new Prince of Ithilien.
