Thorondir

The twenty-second Ruling Steward of Gondor

Stewards of Gondor

The successor to Belecthor II as Steward of Gondor. When his father died, the White Tree of Minas Tirith also died. Without a seedling to replace it, Thorondir left the Dead Tree standing in hope of the King's return, though that would not happen for nearly 140 years after his death. His rule was short; he was Steward for just ten years. He was succeeded by his son, who ruled as Túrin II.

Notes

1

The date of Thorondir's birth appears only in The History of Middle-earth volume XII, The Peoples of Middle-earth. It cannot therefore be considered completely reliable.

2

The thoron in Thorondir's name is surely 'eagle', but -dir is open to interpretation. It is often simply a masculine name ending, so his name may mean no more than 'Eagle-man'. On the other hand, this element can sometimes derive from tir 'watch', so Thorondir's name may imply that he was 'eagle-eyed'.
