Stone of Anor

One of the four palantíri originally established in the South-kingdom of Gondor at the time of its founding. This Stone (more commonly called the 'Anor-stone') was held in Minas Anor, in the keeping of Elendil's second son Anárion and his descendants. As the Third Age drew on and the line of Kings came to an end, the southern palantíri were lost, captured or forgotten. Nonetheless the Stone of Anor remained in its tower, a tower that became better known as Minas Tirith in the later Third Age. In the closing years of the Age, Steward Denethor II dared attempt to use the Stone. He was ensnared by Sauron (who had taken the Ithil-stone long before) and so driven to despairing madness and eventual suicide.
