In the year III 1447 the exiled King Eldacar of Gondor returned to his homeland to drive out Castamir the Usurper. At the Battle of the Crossings of Erui, he defeated Castamir's army and slew the Usurper, but Castamir's sons and many of his supporters escaped the battle and fled southwards to Pelargir.
Eldacar raised a siege against that ancient port which lasted into the following year, but ultimately failed. Castamir's besieged followers were able to assemble a fleet and so to sail away from Pelargir. They voyaged to Umbar, a distant southern possession of Gondor whose people had been supporters of the Usurper. Umbar then broke away from the rule of the true King of Gondor, giving rise to the people known as the Corsairs.
