Red Eye

The symbol of Sauron

Epithet and symbol of Sauron the Lord of the Rings.

The first mention of the Eye of Sauron appears after he was forced to take on a new and more terrible shape for himself, due to his previous fair form being destroyed in the Downfall of Númenor in II 3319. The symbol of the Red Eye seems to derive in some way from this appearance (which evidently recurred when Sauron created yet another new body for himself in the Third Age).
