One of the many names for the Lord of the Nazgûl, mightiest of all the servants of Sauron. In the middle centuries of the Third Age, he had ruled Angmar as its Witch-king, but at the time of the War of the Ring he was King of Minas Morgul. From there he led his armies out to besiege Minas Tirith, confident in an ancient prophecy promising that he would not die at the hands of any man. In the Battle of the Pelennor he was defeated by a woman and a Hobbit - Éowyn and Meriadoc - and so ended a life that had spanned more than a Age.
