It would be natural to make a connection between the name Maggot and the larvae of flies also known as 'maggots', but according to Tolkien such a connection would be mistaken. The Hobbit-name Maggot is not intended to carry any particular meaning.

The only direct reference to Farmer Maggot's children is in The Fellowship of the Ring I 4. When Frodo and his companions are in the farmhouse at Bamfurlong, 'Two of Maggot's sons and his three daughters came in...' The wording here implies that he had at least one other son who wasn't present at the time.
