A member of a lesser branch of the Brandybuck family, descended from Gorbadoc Brandybuck, who was Ilberic's great-grandfather. Ilberic was the second son of Seredic Brandybuck, and through his father he was a distant cousin of both Meriadoc Brandybuck and Frodo Baggins. His mother was Hilda Bracegirdle, and so he would also have been related to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins (who was born a Bracegirdle). Ilberic was present, with his entire family, at Bilbo's famous Farewell Party: he would have been just ten years old at that time.

Ilberic's name seems to contain the Germanic element ric, 'ruler', though the initial Ilbe- is uncertain. Some sources suggest that it may mean 'skill' (so Ilberic would be 'skilled ruler'), while others connect the word with 'Elf' (making Ilberic 'Elf ruler'). Ilbe- occurs in several German place-names (notably Ilbesheim) but in these cases it generally derives from a personal name of unspecified origin.
