A stone bridge built in ancient days by the people of Doriath on the northern borders of their land, crossing the Esgalduin into Dor Dínen. At the time it was originally built, long before Morgoth returned to Middle-earth, it was simply known as Esgaliant, the 'Bridge of Esgalduin'. Later, in the First Age, the valley where it stood, and the hills to the north, became a place of horror and dread, and the bridge was little used. However, it still stood, and it became known in those days as Iant Iaur, meaning simply 'old bridge'.
