The second of the many children of Gerontius, the Old Took. We know almost nothing about his life, except that it was a short one: the family tree of the Tooks notes simply that Hildigard 'died young' (in Appendix C to The Lord of the Rings). Hildigard's elder brother inherited the Thainship from Gerontius to become Isengrim III, but died childless. So, if Hildigard had survived, he would have become Thain in turn, and passed the title on to his descendants. Instead, the Thainship passed on to the Old Took's third son, who became Isumbras IV, and ultimately descended through the generations to Peregrin Took of the Fellowship of the Ring.
Notes
1 |
Though Hildigard's exact date of birth is not recorded, we do know the dates of his elder brother Isengrim and his younger brother Isumbras, so we can be sure that he was born between III 2832 and III 2838. Others of the many children in the same family tended (with a few exceptions) to be born two years apart. So III 2834 - two years after the birth of Isengrim - is probably the most likely year of Hildigard's birth.
