The life of Helm's sister Hild is almost completely unknown. However, she is vitally important to the history of Rohan as being the mother of Fréaláf. Hild's brother, King Helm, had been lost in the Long Winter after the invasion of his land. In the following spring, it was Fréaláf who gained revenge by slaying Wulf, and leading the Rohirrim to the recovery of their land from the invading Dunlendings. It is not known whether Hild lived to see her son's triumph, but nevertheless, through Fréaláf, she played a part in the founding of Rohan's Second Line of Kings.
Notes
1 |
We have no dates at all for Hild, but she was probably born around III 2700 or perhaps a little beforehand, based on the birthdates of her brother Helm (born III 2691) and her son Fréaláf (born III 2726). It was typical for the Rohirrim to live for seventy years or more, so Hild may have survived until III 2770 or even later, though she may quite possibly have perished in the Long Winter (III 2758 - III 2759) alongside many of her people.
